Why is it that some people heal effortlessly, but for other people it’s a greater struggle? When it comes to healing, there is no predetermined timeframe. In this second part of a two-part podcast, we delve into the complexities of health and healing, looking at:
Why healing is a spiral, rather than a straight line
How our relationship with time plays a crucial role in the healing process.
What conditions are involved in healing
In our previous discussion, we confronted the frustration stemming from unmet expectations of a linear healing path.
These expectations are deep-seated and borne from societal norms that emphasise progression as a direct path. However, real healing frequently defies this, opting instead for a non-linear trajectory that circles back on itself.
The key to unlocking healing potential lies in understanding that it's not the length of the journey that matters, but rather how we engage with it. Two individuals may traverse similar health challenges with differing results, solely based on how they inhabit and utilise their time.
Time often becomes the measuring stick of the healing journey: how long will it take, and how long until I am myself again? But the reality is that time itself is a less significant factor than what we accomplish and perceive within it.
Healing doesn't strictly advance; it meanders forward and backward, layering itself like a spiral. Each backwards step is not a failing, but part and parcel of peeling the layers of challenge. One's journey could begin with addressing physical symptoms, only to unearth deeper emotional or psychological wounds once buried.
Whether it's physical intervention, emotional honesty, or simply giving oneself time, each layer of the healing journey offers insights and progress in its own unique fashion.
The aim isn't to discover a perfect protocol or practitioner. While those resources hold value, the real work lies in fostering internal conditions for healing. This involves navigating the spiral of recovery while allowing regression to be recognised as natural rather than failure.
Healing demands flexibility where we listen to what the body needs, adapt course when necessary, and accept the present. When healing feels backwards, it's important to appreciate that it’s akin to nature’s cycles. After all, plants lose leaves in winter not out of failure, but in preparation for renewal.
Compassion is intrinsic to this process, and this intrinsic compassion emerges when self-judgment is quieted, creating space for understanding.
In practice, creating healing conditions means:
Embracing the pace each layer requires.
Attending to the whole self: physical, emotional, spiritual, and relational.
Staying open-minded about why challenges reappear and the lessons they bring.
This isn't about enforcing a linear approach, but rather creating an environment where the intricate patterns of healing can unfurl.
